Till the age of 5 a child goes through a lot of changes, they are curious to know about everything. Their inquisitive nature has to have a particular direction to make them stable with their emotions. Children have to tackle different sets of emotions for the first time, for this, they need to have someone right by their side to help them handle it well. The social and emotional skill development of children needs impulse control, communication for their experiences, and an understanding of other’s points of view.

Children by the age of 5 are not that matured enough to handle emotional changes with stability, they experience several changes around and inside them which is strenuous for them to walk through.
The world is comprised of 6 basic emotions as identified by psychologist Paul Eckman in the 1970s which is experienced by all human cultures. These emotions are:
Happiness
Sadness
Fear
Disgust
Anger
Surprise
It is a spinning wheel of emotions that occurs in the child’s mind, you can’t take a guess about what will come at rest. Children are very fragile, they need care, attention, love, and engrossment to move further and experience life.
Teaching about feelings is a totally abstract concept, you can’t completely teach kids about what feelings and emotions are, you need to adopt a methodology to make your child know what he’s going through. You can explain how it feels to be scared, loved, or sad, these are experiences and it has felt.
Introduction to feelings:
Your child should know what a particular emotion is called. Whenever you see any changes in your kid’s behavior it’s better to sit and talk about it.
Get him to discuss the changes and how he felt, what he wanted to do, what he did, and what could he do if the same thing arises in the future. Teach your kid the words like happy, sad, mad, fear, etc.
Older children should be introduced to more familiar and complex emotions like frustration, disappointment, nervousness, etc.
Teach Coping Strategies:
Frustration, anger, temper, and tantrums are some common emotions that a kid experiences while growing. Even the most responsible and attentive parents feel confused while handling their child’s mood swings and tantrums. It is highly difficult for parents to consider such overwhelming situations with care and smartness.
Parents need to explain to their children that just because they feel angry or frustrated, they can’t hit anyone and create a discrepancy.
Encourage children to take some me-time and think about what’s wrong and right, what could or could not be done, and what are the consequences of their actions?
Model Healthy Choices:
A child learns from what he sights. Remember, if your child watches you act vigorously while you’re angry, they will never listen to your advice to sit and think about your reactions and consequences. Therefore, it is very important to maintain a healthy and friendly environment in front of kids to make them grow to model healthy beings.
Kids need to be taught carefully about each and every step of emotional changes, parents and preschool teachers must help kids to cope up with their anger, feel delighted when they are happy, and grow through these changes with a healthy mindset.
Parents should exchange their ideas they manage their stress and frustration. Ask them questions about what they’re going through.
